Open Call, Water and the Arts
Water in its myriad forms, is deeply connected to culture and communities through the performing arts, such as music, songs, theatre, dance, poetry, puppetry and storytelling. For example, the Bhatiyalis, a genre of music developed by the fishermen based on their life on the boat and the flowing waters. Rivers which play a very significant role in terms of their spiritual connection have made a mark in several traditional hymns. The presence of other different sources of water like rainfall or springs and waterfalls have been referred to innumerable times in folk songs and Indian classical ragas. Instruments such as the Jaltarang, Ghatam and the Mann which has been developed entirely using the physical dynamics of water and its carrier, have a direct relationship with water and play a significant role in the field of music.
